Memorial Service Scheduled for Jud Farmer
Lowell Judson (Jud) Farmer, Jr., retired professor emeritus of speech pathology, died on October 23, 2009. He was director of the Speech Pathology Section of the Communicative Disorders Laboratory and instructor in the Department of Surgery from 1972-2002. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27, in the UMMC Chapel at University Hospital. Our condolences go to his family.
Professor Receives Research Award
Thomas J. Payne, PhD, Professor and Director of Clinical Research, and Associate Director, ACT Center for Tobacco Treatment, Education & Research will be given the Bronze Research Award at the Excellence In Research Awards Ceremony and Reception at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 in the Norman C. Nelson Student Union. Our congratulations to Dr. Payne for being recognized for his exceptional research.
2009/2010 Consumer Choice Award
The October 12th edition of Modern Healthcare announced that the University of Mississippi Medical Center was named a co-winner of the 2009/2010 Consumer Choice Award as one of the most preferred hospitals for overall quality and image in Jackson. We were a co-winner with Baptist. Accomplishing this is the result of a team effort and is further evidence of the tremendous progress UMMC has made over the last several years. Let's all keep up the hard work and make UMMC even better!
Resident Named National Otolaryngology Representative
Dr. Byron Norris, PGY-3, has been selected as one of two national otolaryngology representatives for the Organization of Resident Representatives (ORR). This is a two year term. Member societies of the AAMC Council of Academic Societies may each appoint two residents for two year terms. Byron will serve from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2011. ORR members are liaisons to various AAMC internal committees and advisory boards. Included are the Steering Committees of the Group on Education Affairs (GEA), the Group on Faculty Affairs (GFA), Group of Resident Affairs (GRA), and Women in Medicine (WIM). They also have a voice in Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the Organization of Student Representatives (OSR).
Dr. Norris will attend his first ORR meeting in Boston in November held in conjunction with the AAMC Annual Meeting. Congratulations to Byron! We know he will represent otolaryngology well.
New Faculty Welcomed by Department
We are pleased to announce that Gina D. Jefferson, M.D., and Dr. Julie Porter Wyatt have joined our department as assistant professors. Dr. Jefferson will specialize in the surgical and microsurgical reconstructive treatment of head and neck cancer at both UMMC and the G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center. Dr. Wyatt will specialize in general medical and surgical dermatology for both children and adults.

After receiving the M.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 2000, Dr. Jefferson did residency training in California at Charles R. Drew University and Loma Linda University Medical Center, where she completed her residency in 2008. She has recently completed a head and neck surgery fellowship and a macrovascular reconstruction surgery fellowship at the University of Miami. During her medical training, Dr. Jefferson served as an officer on various resident committees and was a presenter at several conferences. She was actively involved in research during her residency, winning a first place award for outstanding resident research at the National Medical Association in 2006 and in 2008. She will continue her research here, focusing on head and neck cancer treatments. |
The addition of Dr. Jefferson to our faculty will allow us to expand our outstanding head and neck and reconstructive surgery program both at the University and the VA. Dr. Jefferson, Dr. Kristen Otto, and Dr. Karen Pitman combine to create one of the finest head and neck cancer treatment teams in the nation.
Dr. Julie Porter Wyatt received the M.D. from the University of Mississippi Medical Center, then completed her dermatology residency at the University of Virginia in June 2009. During the academic training, Dr. Wyatt was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and Phi Kappa Phi and received numerous scholarships and awards. As a medical student, she was active in the American Medical Association's student section, serving as UMMC's representative in 2003. Dr. Wyatt remains active in dermatological societies. She is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the Women's Dermatologic Society, the Medical Dermatology Society and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. |

Dr. Wyatt is an important addition to our growing dermatology division. We will now be able to accommodate more patients in this critically underserved specialty and provide expanded pediatric services in this field. We are very fortunte to have Dr. Wyatt come back to serve the people of her state and her alma mater.
Visiting Professor
Dr. Brian Burkey, currently at the Cleveland Clinic--Section Head, Head and Neck Surgery and Oncology, Head and Neck Institute, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, is scheduled to be our visiting professor on September 17-18, 2009. He is also adjunct professor of otolaryngology at the Vanderbilt-Bill Wilkerson Center for Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences.
Dr. Burkey will speak on "The State of Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery: Past, Present, and Future Directions" and "An Evidence-Based Treatment Algorithm for Parapharyngeal Space Masses." 2009 Alumni Dinner in San Diego
The Department is delighted to partner once again with Stryker Craniomaxillofacial and Stryker Neuro/Spine/ENT to host an alumni dinner in conjunction with the upcoming American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Foundation Meeting in San Diego. It is planned for Monday, October 5, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. at McCormick and Schmick's Seafood Restaurant. Former residents, current residents, clinical faculty, and staff are all encouraged to attend. Local VA in the News
Dr. Charles P. Clericuzio, chief of Surgical Services, at the G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center, recently made the following announcement. For the 3rd quarter FY 09, VAMC, Jackson is one of only 3 VAMCs nationwide to have a "perfect score" regarding the Surgical Care Improvement Project, and the only one in Complex Level "1" (those doing the most complex surgical procedures) to achieve this recognition.

Dr. Franzese joined the department in 2004. She is presently the Residency Program Director where she supervises residents and directs the resident application/selection process. She serves as Chief of Otolaryngology at the G. V. "Sonny" Montgomery VA Medical Center.
Dr. Jordan, professor, joined the department in June, 2002. He serves as Vice Chairman and Medical Director of the departmental clinics. He is very involved in resident teaching and has been named Faculty Teacher of the Year several years by residents. Dr. Jordan's practice focuses on facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery as well as cutaneous oncology of the head and neck.
Dr. Sutton works at our ACT Center where she manages tobacco treatment programs and conducts training on cessation techniques for the ACT Center staff, community organizations, and other healthcare professionals. In April, Dr. Sutton received her license as a psychologist in Mississippi.
Congratulations to these faculty for their well-deserved recognition.
Advisory Council Member
William Mustain, PhD, has been elected to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's Audiology Advisory Council (AAC). During his three-year term, he will be responsible for identifying and discussing issues of concern to members and will provide recommendations to the Board for developing future programs and services. Dr. Mustain has been on faculty in our department since 1985.
Professor Elected to National Office
Dr. Harold Kolodney, Professor and Director of Maxillofacial Prosthodontics in the Division of Oral Oncology and Bio-behavioral Medicine was elected 2nd Vice President of the Mississippi Dental Association (MDA) at its 134th annual meeting in Sandestin, Florida on June 14th. He will advance to 1st Vice President followed by President Elect and finally President over the next 4 years. This is the first time in the history of the MDA that a University of Mississippi faculty member has been elected to serve in this prestigious office.
Congratulations, Dr. Kolodney. We are so proud of you.
Residents Obtain Fellowships
Three of our senior residents have matched into fellowships. Dr. Kimberly A. Donnellan, PGY-4, just received notification that she will be entering a Facial Plastic fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in July 2010.
Chief resident Dr. Jason Guillot begins a fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Rousso Facial Plastic Surgery Clinic in Birmingham in July 2009. Dr. Andrea Lewis, also a chief resident, will remain at UMMC and enter the Sleep Medicine fellowship, beginning in July 2009.

Graduation 2009
The Eighth Annual Lectureship and Resident Graduation in Otolaryngology and Communicative Sciences was held Friday, June 12, 2009, with lectures beginning at 8:00 a.m. A dinner and awards ceremony followed that evening, and a golf tournament and barbecue concluded the activities on Saturday.

We were honored to have Douglas A. Girod, MD, FACS, an outstanding leader in the field of otolaryngology, as our Visiting Professor for this year's lectureship. He is currently Professor and Russell E. Bridwell MD Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology -Head and Neck Surgery and Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Kansas. His lectures were "Oromandibular Reconstruction: Options and Controversies" and "Transoral Laser Surgery for Head and Neck Cancer." Research presentations were made by graduating residents, Jason Guillot, MD, and Andrea Lewis, MD, and by senior residents Kimberly Donnellan, MD and Ben Jeffcoat, MD. Dr. Girod then also conducted a case studies conference with the residents. |
The dinner and awards ceremony, honoring our graduates Drs. Guillot and Lewis, took place that evening at the Country Club of Jackson. Dr. Guillot will be moving back to Birmingham, Alabama where he will be entering a fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Rousso Facial Plastic Surgery Clinic. Dr. Lewis will remain at UMMC where Andrea will enter a sleep medicine fellowship.

Dr. Jason Guillot Wins 2009 COSM Award
The Department of Otolaryngology and Communicative Sciences was well represented at the Combined Otolaryngology Spring Meetings (COSM) in Phoenix, AZ, May 28-31, 2009. We had residents and faculty on six different posters or podium presentations.

Marshall, MD, PhD won first place in the poster competition with their poster entitled "Prognostic Value of CD4+ Regulatory T Cell Subpopulations in Oropharyngeal and Oral Cavity Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma Patients." |
Dr. Andrea Lewis (PGY-5) had both a podium presentation, entitled "Intracellular Distribution and Activity of the JAK/STAT Components in Respiratory Papillomatosis," sponsored by Dr. John Schweinfurth, and a poster presentation, entitled "Congenital Bilateral Vocal Cord paralysis and Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease" sponsored by Dr. Jeffrey Carron. Dr. Byron Norris (PGY-2), in conjunction with Dr. John Schweinfurth, gave an oral presentation entitled "Management of Recurrent Laryngeal Sensory Neuropathic Symptoms." An abstract submitted by Dr. W. Henry Barber V (PGY-3), "Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor of the Larynx, " sponsored by Dr. Scott Stringer, was also selected for poster presentation. Dr. Kimberly Donnellan (PGY-4), in conjunction with Dr. Karen Pitman and Dr. Ron Cannon, had a podium presentation "Intraoperative Laryngeal Nerve Monitoring during Thyroidectomy". Congratulations to all of these for their continued outstanding research efforts!
Two other residents, Dr. Brad Byrne and Dr. Michael Goodier, and faculty, Dr. Stringer, Dr. Thomas Eby, Dr. Pitman, and Dr. Schweinfurth also attended the meetings.
Another Outstanding Success on Annual Otolaryngology Examination
Once again our residents achieved outstanding success on the 2009 Annual Otolaryngology Examination, scoring among the top programs in the nation. Seven of our residents scored at or above the 90 th percentile within their resident group. Also, two of them also scored in the top 10 percentile of all residents taking the examination.
MSO / HNS Spring Meeting
The spring meeting of the Mississippi Society of Otolaryngology / Head & Neck Surgery will be June 18-21, 2009 at Point Clear, Alabama. The annual Resident / Faculty Retreat will be held in conjunction with this meeting. All otolaryngology residents PGY-2 through PGY-4 will attend the meeting at the department's expense. This is a great opportunity for residents to network for job opportunities with attendees from around the state and the country. The faculty and the residents will have individual and joint meetings to discuss our program and plan for the next year.
Dr. Karen Pitman is the MSO / HNS Program Chair for the scientific program. Dr. Randy Jordan, Dr. Scott Stringer, Dr. George Taybos and Dr. Jeff Carron, treasurer, will all present lectures.
Other faculty attending the MSO / HNSmeeting from our department will include Dr. Tom Eby and Dr. Christine Franzese. Drs. Kim Donnellan, Ben Jeffcoat, Henry Barber, Brad Byrne, Michael Goodier, Ryan Case, Alan Grimm, and Byron Norris are the residents who will be attending the MSO meeting this year.
Dr. Franzese Co-Creator of SUO-OPDO
Dr. Christine Franzese, Assistant Professor and Otolaryngology Program Director, is the first chair and co-creator of the Society of University Otolaryngologists-Otolaryngology Program Directors Organization. The First Annual Meeting was held in conjunction with the SUO annual meeting in Chicago, IL on October 24, 2008. This organization was created as a forum for program directors to exchange ideas and information, discuss problems, and highlight successes, particularly in regards to ACGME and RRC requirements. It will serve to increase communications among programs and address timely and significant topics that program directors face.
Dr. Franzese has created a discussion group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SUO_OPDO/, which has the ability to file share and allow the creation and sharing of databases. She uploaded some basic reference files that are commonly used so that people can avoid having to go to multiple different websites or can avoid having to figure out or navigate through the ACGME website. Members are encouraged to upload files to share.
Congratulations to Dr. Franzese for her hard work on establishing this much needed organization!
Dr. Lewis Chen Joins Department

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Lewis Chen has joined our department as Associate Professor. Dr. Chen’s responsibilities will include developing a research program in the area of vestibular and oculomotor neurophysiology. After earning his Ph.D. degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1991, Dr. Chen completed postdoctoral training in the Laboratory of Neurophysiology at the National Institute of Mental Health in Maryland and the Laboratory of Integrative Neuroscience in Japan. He has been a member of the research faculty at Baylor College of Medicine and at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.
As an established neurophysiology scientist with extensive experience in the field of cortical neurophysiology, Dr. Chen focuses his main research on oculomotor and vestibular functions in both humans and animals. His teaching interests include neurobiology, neuroanatomy, oculomotor physiology, biostatistics, and cognitive sciences. Dr. Chen is widely published with over twenty-three papers in top medical research journals, is a member of several scientific research societies, and serves on the editorial board as a reviewer of research journals. He has received continuous research funding and grants since 2001.
Dr. Chen will be a valuable asset to our existing, nationally recognized vestibular research program. He will serve as a research mentor for residents and medical students and collaborate with other department faculty members in developing new projects for NIH funding.
Otolaryngology Honor Award
Claude Franklin Harbarger was recognized recently at The School of Medicine Honors Day as the recipient of the 2009 Department of Otolaryngology and Communicative Sciences Award. The book award and certificate are awarded annually to a senior medical student for excellence in the field of otolaryngology. He will be joining the otolaryngology residency program in July at the Medical College of Georgia. Congratulations to Claude for his hard work.
Visiting Professor
Dr. David Haynes, associate professor both in the Department of Otolaryngology and the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences at Vanderbilt Medical Center, was our visiting professor on April 9-10, 2009. He lectured on "Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss" and on "Contemporary management of Chronic Ear Disease." The residents greatly benefited from these presentations.
Dr. Haynes currently serves as director of the Division of Otology and Neurotology at The Bill Wilkerson Center for Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences, the Director of The Otology Group of Vanderbilt, and the Adult and Pediatric Cochlear Implant Program.
The Match - New Residents, 2009
On March 19, the National Resident Matching Program notified our department that we had matched three outstanding students, Beth Bailey, Mary Gajewski, and Cheryl Gustafson.
Sarah Elizabeth “Beth” Bailey is a native of Augusta, Georgia. She graduated magna cum laude from Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. She is currently a senior at the University of South Carolina. Beth was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society as a junior medical student. She has had significant experience in research, resulting in several publications. Beth is the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards. Her fiance will be joining the internal medicine residency program at UMMC.
Mary A. Gajewski Ashmead was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. She graduated summa cum laude from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in the honors track University Scholars. She was elected into Phi Beta Kappa while at Baylor. Currently, a senior at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, Mary was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha in her junior year. She has served as co-president of her class, a member of the UTSW Six-Year Planning Committee, and a member of the UTSW Leadership Committee.
Cheryl Janene Gustafson is a native of Englewood, Colorado. She graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences-pre-professional and kinesiological sciences from the University of Nevada. She is a senior student at the University of Nevada and has been inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi where she served as Vice President. Cheryl’s research experience has resulted in podium and poster presentations. She has served on numerous committees in leadership positions.

Medical Staff Election
Karen Crews, DMD, Professor and Director of Oral Oncology/Bio-Behavioral Medicine in the Department of Otolaryngology, has been named to the Hospital Medical Staff Executive Committee. She will serve as a Member at Large for 2009-2011. Congratulations to Dr. Crews!
Residents to Participate in Rhinology Bowl
Dr. Bradley A. Byrne, PGY-3 Resident, and Dr. Ryan C. Case, PGY-2 Resident, will participate as our team in the Rhinology Bowl held in conjection with the Rhinology World 2009 meeting in Philadelphia, PA, April 15-19, 2009. The competition is open to resident teams only and will test the residents' knowledge of all rhinology. Resident teams who successfully progress through the brackets will meet in the Rhionology Bowl Championship championship on Sunday. The winning teams will receive monetary prizes.

Resident Wives Participate in Annual "Taste of the U"
The wives of our residents enjoyed participating in the 2009 "Taste of the U", held Saturday, February 21, at the Jackson Medical Mall. This year's display had a"Halloween" theme, complete with scary music, dry ice, spell books and potions and, of course, lots of Witches-check out those legs! Their menu featured "witches brew," a chicken and sausage gumbo stew, served directly from the witches’ cave. The Taste of the U is the major fund-raiser for the UMMC Alliance in support of worthwhile projects including patient needs, the chapel fund, and art acquisitions.

2009 Triological Society Awards and Trophies
Our department was well represented at The Triological Society's Southern and Middle Combined Section Meetings in Bonita Springs, Florida, January 8-11, 2009. We had students, residents, and faculty on 8 different posters or podium presentations.
Drs. Kim Donnellan, Tom Eby, Wu Zhou, and William Mustain won second place in the poster competition with their poster on "Frequency Tuning of Bone Conducted Tone Burst-Evoked Myogenic Potentials in Extraocular Muscles (BOVEMP) in Normal Human Subjects."
Drs. Henry Barber, Kim Donnellan, and Ben Jeffcoat all were awarded travel grants by the Triological Society to help defray their meeting expenses.
Three-Peat Champs!
We also won the Southern Section "Residency Challenge" golf tournament for the third year in a row on Friday. The team consisted of Dr. Mark Reed (faculty), Dr. Jamie Sisk (recent graduate of our program), Dr. Ben Jeffcoat (current PGY-4 resident), and Matt Stevens (M4 student with a poster presentation). This win is unprecedented and represents the most wins by any residency program in the history of the tournament.

New Communicative Sciences Division Chief and Faculty
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Ian Windmill has accepted the position of Chief of the
Division of Communicative Sciences in our department. Dr. Windmill is currently an Associate Professor and Director of the Audiology Section in the Division of Communication Disorders in the Department of Surgery at the University of Louisville. His wife, Dr. Sue Windmill, will be joining us as an audiologist.

The addition of these two outstanding faculty members will help us continue to build our Division of Communicative Sciences into one of the best in the nation based on the outstanding foundation established under the able leadership of Drs. Mustain and Peck. We anticipate that the Windmills will be joining us around early February.
Oral Cancer Clinic
With the establishment of an Oral Oncology Center in the UMMC Cancer Institute, Mississippi now can provide a unique dental service for all citizens. The clinic was established to provide comprehensive oral health services for patients diagnosed with cancer. According to Dr. Karen Crews, director of the Oral Oncology Center and the ACT Center for Tobacco Treatment, Research, and Education in the Department of Otolaryngology, "this is the only clinic in the state of Mississippi that is devoted entirely to the prevention, early intervention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of individuals who are at risk or have been diagnosed with a cancer. Our goal is to help our patients achieve optimal oral health before and during their cancer treatment, and then to maintain optimal oral health after their cancer treatment."
Dr. Crews credits Dr. Harry Precheur, Chair, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pathology, and Dr. Ray Holder, Chair, Advanced General Dentistry for their help and support in the implementation phase of the clinic. She also acknowledges the efforts of Dr. Scott Stringer, Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs, Chair, Department of Communicative Sciences and President of University Physicians, for his visionary leadership and steadfast support of the dental profession and healthcare.

Dr. George Taybos

Dr. Harold Kolodney
Dr. George Taybos, Professor of Dentistry and Otolaryngology, joined the center in July. Dr. Taybos is a nationally recognized expert in the management of patients with oral lesions. Dr. Harold Kolodney, the most recent addition, brings more than 20 years' experience to the clinic as a maxillofacial and board certified prosthodontist. Both doctors will accept referrals from practitioners throughout Mississippi.

Student Interest Groups Formed
Two Student Interest Groups have recently been formed within the department - one in otolaryngology and one in dermatology.

2008 Alumni Dinner in Chicago
The Department partnered with Stryker Craniomaxillofacial and Stryker Neuro/Spine/ENT to host an alumni dinner in conjunction with the recent American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Foundation Meeting in Chicago. It was Sunday, September 21st, at 8:00 pm at Sullivan's Steakhouse. Former residents, current residents, clinical faculty, and staff were in attendance.
The Department and UMMC was well-represented at several September meetings in Chicago. Dr. Jason Guillot, PGY-5, attended the AAFPRS meeting; Dr. W. Henry Barber V, PGY-3, attended both the Essentials of Plastic Surgery Course and the AAO-HNSF meeting; Dr. Kim Donnellan, PGY-4, received travel grants to attend an AO Principles Workshop (AAFPRS) and the AAO-HNSF meeting; Dr. Ben Jeffcoat, PGY-4, Dr. Brad Byrne, PGY-3, Dr. Ryan Case, PGY-2, and Dr. Alan Grimm, PGY-2 attended the AAO-HNSF meeting. Dr. Jeffcoat was chosen to present a talk at the2008 Otolaryngology Historical Society Dinner.
