Dr. Payne is active in many societies including the American Psychological Association, Association for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence (charter member), Mississippi Psychological Association, Society for Research on Nicotine & Tobacco (charter member), and the Society of Behavioral Medicine.

Dr. Payne has over 40 published articles and book chapters. He is a frequent presenter at both national and local meetings including ongoing state and national workshops for healthcare providers in the treatment of tobacco dependent patients.
