Externships in the Department of Otolaryngology are offered from July through January. This 4 week clinical rotation is designed for students who are interested in pursuing graduate medical education in otolaryngology. Students work with otolaryngology faculty in the clinical and didactic setting and actively participate in all aspects of patient care at the intern level. A 15-minute presentation to the department on a topic of his/her choice is required.
Interested students will need to apply through VSAS. Please contact Heather Verzwyvelt in the Division of Student Records and Registrar, University of Mississippi Medical Center, 2500 North State Street, Jackson, MS 39216-4505, 601-984-1080 or hsverzwyvelt@registrar.umsmed.edu if you have questions about the application process. Only senior medical students enrolled in good standing in an LCME- or American Osteopathic Association-accredited school, in the U.S. or Canada, will be offered a senior elective in this School of Medicine. After review of the application and verification of the applicant's credentials the Registrar's Office will notify the otolaryngology education administrator for approval of the elective. Students should also send a copy of their USMLE Step 1 score to Mary Manasco, Education Administrator, Department of Otolaryngology and Communicative Sciences, University of Mississippi Medical Center, 2500 North State Street, Jackson, MS 39216-4505. Availability of specific dates is determined on a first come first served basis.
A shorter, more flexible rotation, ranging from 1-10 regular business days is also available by special request. Students who would like to visit the otolaryngology department, observe clinical activities and meet the faculty and residents may do so by special request. While we do not offer academic credit for this mini-rotation, it is a mechanism to visit and interact with the members of our department. Students interested in this opportunity should contact Mary Manasco at 601-984-6885 or mbmanasco@ent.umsmed.edu. For additional information, you may also email Dr. Karen Pitman, Student Director for Otolaryngology, at kpitman@ent.umsmed.edu.
To comply with UMMC and the State of Mississippi regulations, accepted visiting students must be fingerprinted on the first day of the rotation at no cost to them.
The Department of Otolaryngology and Communicative Sciences welcomes visiting students but does not guarantee an invitation to interview to all visiting students. That decision will be made during review of the entire applicant pool in ERAS.
